One of the easiest and most effective ways to increase the relevance of the writing process is to move away from the traditional method of having students writing solely for their teacher. Blogging is a fantastic way to connect students to a meaningful audience of many. It can connect classes to parents, community members, and students across the world.
It can be intimidating, however, for a teacher who has never used blogging before to get a grip on how to implement blogging in a class effectively. But there is help. Starting this week, Challenge Yourself to Blog starts their ten-week semi-annual blogging challenge. It’s a fantastic way to have some or all of your students jump into blogging with some structured activities.
As always, it’s important to go over online safety protocols and get parent permission and administrator approval for activities that connect students to the greater community. Most important, as an instructor, is to enlist responsible adults in the process to monitor activity and help teach kids effective online communication skills. Good luck, and have fun!
