I started the evening thinking that I’d make the presentation for a TIES Technology Conference session that I’ll be doing next week, but after thirty minutes of working on that, I just wasn’t getting anywhere. The creative juices weren’t flowing.
I have no idea why, but I started thinking how cool it would be to have a hologram as part of a conference presentation, and then wondered if that was even possible. One thing lead to another and pretty soon I was watching the video below, which showed a basic hologram projector.
That got me got me wondering if it would be hard to make a projector like that, and it turns out it’s not. All you really need is a ruler, a cutter, and some old CD cases. Bingo! I had my project for the day!
I found the video below which showed a very rough version of a projector, which was perfect given that I was starting at 11pm and already a bit tired. The hardest part was finding CD cases, but with that out of the way it probably took about 30 minutes to make my projector.
The final product was rough, but the effect is still pretty cool. Sure, it’s a reflection rather than a hologram, but it still looks great with the lights off. It even impressed my teenage son: “That’s the coolest thing you’ve made so far.” Projector photo is below.
